与普通蝶阀类似，拉杆式外螺纹蝶阀通过旋转蝶板来控制阀门的开闭，从而实现对介质流动的控制。当拉动拉杆使阀杆旋转时，阀杆带动蝶板绕轴旋转。蝶板平面与管道轴线平行时，阀门开启，介质可顺畅通过；蝶板旋转 90° 与管道轴线垂直时，阀门关闭，截断介质流动。此外，通过控制蝶板的旋转角度，还可实现对介质流量的调节。
